Everyone and their dog are talking about Yu Darvish and it seems like everyone outside the state of Texas is not only expecting, but actively hoping that he fails. And if I hear another Dice-K comparison, I’m going to kill someone.
Dice-K’s lowest ERA in Japan was 2.13, the year before he got posted. Yu’s ERA for the last 5 seasons in Japan are all below 2.00. They average 1.72, with a low of 1.44. If Yu woke up with Dice-K’s Japan stats, he would jump off a bridge. Not to mention that their deliveries are COMPLETELY different. Look at Dice-K’s windup and delivery on his pitches. Now, look at Yu’s pitches. Even the non-baseball person can see the difference and the reason why Dice-K’s elbow has finally blown out. Toss that in with Yu being 5 inches taller than Dice-K, yet still at 185 lbs for both of them. Much more athletic of a build.
In the 2009 World Baseball Classic, Yu came in for his first save opportunity ever. He recorded three outs with a bloop hit tossed in between (Rollins). The outs were a Jeter groundout, a David Wright K, and a K looking to Adam Dunn. In the Majors that year, those 3 batters combined for a BA of .302 and an OBP of .398.
Not to raise my hopes too high, but I think that everyone is just expecting him to fail because Dice-K left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth after his 2007 campaign where he ate up 200+ innings and his 2008 18-3 season, but Yu is a totally different kind of monster. Give the kid a chance.
