Hi, My name's Lee. I'm your run of the mill, liberal Texan, sports fanatic that wishes he was a squirrel from time to time. 4th and Short is a window into my opnions on modern sports, observations of the apocalypse, and any random thought that has the pleasure of flying through my head.

Baseball Salaries, Just for Fun

Adding to my week long praise of Yu Darvish and silencing the haters who think that the Rangers overpaid for him, let’s look at how much the club will spend on him this season.

The posting fee was $51.7 M, so let’s divide that by 6 for the 6 years of the contract.  That leaves us with $8.616 M invested for this season.  And because of the backloaded contract that was signed, Yu is set to make $5.5 M this season.  That total investment is $14.116 M for the 2012 debut season.  Here is a list of pitchers that make more than $14.116 in 2012:

CC Sabathia, Barry Zito, Carlos Zambrano, Johan Santana, Roy Halladay, Jake Peavy, Josh Beckett, AJ Burnett, Francisco Rodriguez, Felix Hernandez, Justin Verlander, Mariano Rivera, John Lackey, Derek Lowe, Cliff Lee, and Cole Hamels.

I think the Rangers are gonna do just fine with the money they’ve invested in this kid.
