Rant of the Day: The Anti-Choicers in Dallas

OK, so like I’ve said before, I drive past abortion protesters every single day on my way to work. I’m alright with that on some level. It is within their right to peacfully protest on a sidewalk, and they’re not firebombing the clinics (yet). I would equally expect the same courtesy during anti-war rallies or many of the other hippie activities that I partake in. Normally I just give them the finger and continue my commute past the medical district. However, something today rubbed me the wrong way.

Today, instead of the normal one or two protesters, there were around 15 along the sidewalk outside of this clinic off of Walnut Hill and Greenville (Do these people even have jobs? It’s 8:30 AM!). They all had signs that either said “PRAY TO END ABORTION”, “ABORTION HURTS WOMEN”, or “IT’S A CHILD, NOT A CHOICE”. I made sure that I made eye contact this time when I gave them all the finger. But this wasn’t about their peaceful protest in front of a clinic where some women make the hardest decision of their life. This was about something different.

Where were these people when a 13 year old girl died from leukemia last week in Medical City Dallas? I didn’t see them holding prayer vigils to end cancer. I didn’t see them offering spiritual support for the family. In fact, I didn’t see them at all. All I saw was a little girl with her family while less than 5 miles away, the “true” Christians waged war against abortion. This. Is. Insane.

Just around the corner from the clinic is the Dallas Presbyterian Hospital. You want to speak out against something that hurts women? Go to the Margot Perot Center. There, you can find several hundred women suffering from breast cancer. They would love to have your support. I consider myself a devout Christian and believe that faith can help someone through illness. You want to pray to end something, Dallas ~~pro-lifers~~ anti-choicers? Pray to end cancer. It’s a very real fight and it’s less than a 10 minute walk from where you are. Oh, I almost forgot something. Go fuck yourselves.

The Beelzebubs - Come Sail Away

Though I 100% agree with Katie that Nota (viva PR!) will pwn their way to be champions of The Sing Off, this performance from the Beelzebubs was nothing short of fun. I’ve only gotten into a capella music in the last 1.5 year or so, but this group from Tufts is pretty ~~nerdy~~ epic.

Long story short, but my wisdom tooth on my bottom left side is acting up and the soreness/swelling is making speech without pain impossible. I didn’t talk for my last 3 hours of work yesterday. After I got off of work, I went Christmas shopping for two of my friends and my sister. I faked sign language so I wouldn’t have to talk to anyone. Guy at World Market: my shaking my head and pointing to my ear does not mean I want a credit card.

I got home and literally drank soup out of a big straw. I took a naproxen and went to the exercise bike to watch the last part of The Sing Off (Nota pwned again). I biked 8 miles in silence. I have not talked since yesterday at 2pm.

Well, my Mondays are now incredibly more depressing. After a long day at work, I no longer can look forward to a new episode of Heroes (season resumes in January). However, I was pleasantly surprised with The Sing Off. After an hour of watching some Puerto Rican group totally pwn a group from BYU, I went off to the gym.

One thing I like about my complex’s gym more than the Country Club is that it’s almost always empty. Well, fuck. Yesterday was not the case. On one end was me with Monday night football on at a reasonable volume while running on a treadmill. On the other end was a guy blasting wrestling from the TV while literally screaming while lifting weights. Also note that he was doing seated lat pull-downs of a whole 100 pounds. After 2 miles and hearing him yell “Oooooonnne! AHHHHHHH! Twwwwoooooooo! AHHHH!”, I went to the media room to the exercise bike.

There, I biked in peace while watching the Cardinals fumble worse than Felix Jones. I then logged 8 miles while still hearing the wrestling fan scream doing seated curls of 50 pounds.

62 miles down. 38 to go.

My 10 Favorite Films of 2009

(Editor’s note: Obviously, I didn’t see every single movie that came out this year, so if one you like isn’t on here, feel free to FedEx me some clever insults)

(1) Paranormal Activity - I’m a huge fan of horror films, so obviously this film was very refreshing for me. Not only did it bring the viewer into the film at a depth not seen in over a decade, but the lack of effects re-opened the door that CGI closed. It still gives me nightmares.

(2) The Hurt Locker - This film moved me in a very profound way. Earlier this year, I had to say goodbye to my best friend from college as he shipped out to fight in Afghanistan. The Hurt Locker showed the full amount of terror that coincides with war in a place like Iraq. The reality of the characters in war without a stereotypical Hero that ends it meant a lot to me.

(3) Inglorious Basterds - What can I say? This movie had everything fun in it. Nazis dying. Badass Jews. Teddy Fuckin’ Williams. In my opinion, this was his best film since Pulp Fiction. Tarantino joined multiple genres and the result is a film you can watch over and over again.

(4) Invictus - This film is still fresh on my mind. Every now and then, you see a biopic about a particular period in time (ex Cinderella Man), and you have to wonder if it all really happened. The amazing actors in it only enhanced this amazing story. You will leave the theatre feeling like you are a disappointment. And you are.

(5) Precious - If you watch this film without feeling uncomfortable, you’re a stronger person than me. This is one of the few films I’ve seen where hardly anything is left out from the book. There are big things in the future of Sidibe.

(6) The Hangover - This is probably one of the funniest things that I’ve ever seen. And I’ve seen multiple monkeys masturbating at the zoo. If you’re a big comedy fan, then you’ve been waiting for Galifinakis’ big break as long as I have. This is it.

(7) Zombieland - In the wake of recent “zombie” movies, this was a breath of fresh air. Not only did they not take the genre too seriously, but they made it fun. The action is creatively spliced in to the comedy, and when it’s over, you feel like it just started and want more.

(8) District 9 - One part Starship Troopers. One part Schindler’s List. All parts amazing.

(9) Up - Still not up to Wall*E standards, but Dug and the rest of the talking animals helped make this fun for everyone. However, I believed that it could have made the viewer cry at least two more times. The sign of a good cartoon is one that takes you throw every emotion without you knowing.

(10) The Girlfriend Experience - I know not a lot of people saw this, but it was truly amazing. Soderbergh examines whether a high class escort in NYC can maintain a normal life. With porn actress Sasha Grey, this story of random cuts you have to put together in your mind is oddly empathetic to every relationship going through a hard time.

Before my super fancy cocktail party on Friday (Kirby hired a bartender and a jazz band for it. Totes fancy), I hit the gym to use the exercise bike and watch ESPN not talk about sports (aka Tiger Woods shit). Before you knew it, I biked 8 miles and wanted to punch everyone in the face.

So I just got to my parent’s house and there is country music playing loud as shit in our attic. Apprently, the attic got invaded by a family of squirrels (cutest infestation ever. MUCH better than the koalas). The humane way to get the squirrels out is to blast music for a full day and then board up the way they got in. And everyone knows how much squirrels hate Corb Lund and George Strait.
