Your obligatory Yu Darvish fanboy post of the day:
7 innings pitched. 4 hits. 1 earned run. 9 strikeouts. 97 total pitches with 62 strikes. 20 out of the 27 batters faced took first pitch strikes.
With Darvish improving to 4-0, he becomes the first Rangers pitcher ever to win 4 out of their first 5 games pitched.
And yes, ladies. He’s single.

Let’s hope this stays a headline for the next 5 years or so.
Instead of taking a chance on Darvish or at least scouting him extensively for the last couple of seasons like the Rangers and Blue Jays did, they traded away Jesus Montero, arguably one of their best prospects of the last several years, for a maybe seriously injured Michael Pineda. I can understand being previously burned on Japanese prospects, but if a layperson like me can see the vast differences in their pitching mechanics with the naked eye, why couldn’t the pinstripes’s front office?
Let the Yumania continue.

Last night, we beat out 20 other teams at trivia to win by 6 points while Darvish struck out 10 Yankees. I had to give him credit where credit was due via our team photo.

I hate that headline. It’s okay, you should, too. But it came to me while in the shower and before I toweled off and started thinking clearly, I was stuck with it. Speaking of toweling off, I just want to remind you that this exists:
(via Red State Blue State)
Tonight against the Yankees, Yu Darvish announced his presence with authority, tearing through the Yankees lineup and looking every bit the pitcher that the Rangers thought they were acquiring. Going up against a lineup of All-Stars and future Hall of Famers, Darvish threw 119 pitches, 82 of them for strikes, finishing with 10 strikeouts in 8.1 shutout innings. Even nicer was that Darvish was able to locate six, count ‘em, six different pitches for strikes.
While the strike zone was a fairly generous one, Darvish was able to use all of those pitches make the usually stoic Yankee batters flail wildly out of the strike zone. My count may be off, but it appears that the Yankees chased roughly twenty pitches out of the zone:
Derek Jeter picked up two more hits in the loss, moving his average to .416, and after 77 at-bats this season, we’re about a week away before the first “Can Jeter hit .400?” articles? With the victory, the Rangers improved to a league best 14-4 and have already opened up a 7.5 game lead over the Angels.

8.1 innings. 10 strikeouts. 2 walks. No runs.
Against the fucking Yankees.
Welcome to the age of Darvish, Rangers fans. This shit is here to stay.

On a whim, Shannon and I got tickets to tonight’s game before it completely sold out (protip: use the promo code DRPEPPER for $10 tickets). It’s the MLB debut of Yu Darvish aka The Big Yunit aka Whirling Darvish aka YuDaMan aka Peanut the Kidnapper. I already own 2 Darvish shirts.
New goal for this season: Get interviewed by the Japanese media after a Darvish start.

Monday, April 9th will be Yu Darvish’s first start in the MLB. Since I already have tickets for opening day and Sunday, April 8th, there’s no way I could afford going to this game as well. This puts him 4th in the rotation behind Lewis, Holland, and Harrison.
Instead, Yu is pitching tonight at 9 PM CST in his final Spring Training game. It’s being broadcasted locally on TXA21, so I’m going to wear my opening day outfit and watch it at home.
I’m not weird. You’re weird.

1 hit and 1 unearned run with 70 pitches through 4 innings of work for Yu Darvish today. Also, I just noticed that our Spring Training ballpark’s center field looks like the Doppler Effect.
Also, our ballpark has several new Japanese Sponsors. One being the hilariously titled gloops.com.
